PAY has put together a GOALmodels “Top Ten” group. The goal of the group, which meets every month and continues to grow, is to help us enhance and expand the GOALmodels program. Here’s a list of the movers and shakers involved in this group with their bio.

LEE KANON ALPERT

Attorney, Arbitrator and Mediator / Host of “Parallax Forum” TV program
Alpert & Barr – Most Wise GOALmodel speaker

Lee is a founding shareholder of the Alpert & Barr Law Firm, located in Encino for 27 years. His practice for the past near 30 years has specialized in business, real estate, government relations and strategic planning, and he serves as a well-respected business and construction mediator and arbitrator. Both Lee and his firm have been recognized by legal, business, political and civic organizations for their ongoing commitment to improving the quality of law and lawyer’s best practices, the quality of the political process and the quality of life in our communities.
Lee is a past member of the City of Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners, the first and past president of the City of Los Angeles Board of Neighborhood Commissioners, past president of the City’s Board of Building and Safety Commissioners and has served on many City, State and Federal commissions and task forces. Currently, Lee is the Chair of the Governing Board of the Encino Tarzana Regional Medical Center, Co-Chair of Speaker Emeritus Assembly member Robert Hertzberg’s Business Advisory Commission, past chair and a commissioner on the Los Angeles County Judicial Procedures Commission, Chair for the 12th LA City Council District Citizens Advisory Council for Councilman Hal Bernson, Co-Chair of the newly formed San Fernando Valley Community Advisory Commission for Councilman Jack Weiss, and actively participates in numerous other government, community and philanthropic activities.
In addition, Lee hosts Time Warner’s Los Angeles Public Affairs television program “Parallax Forum”. He is the recipient of the prestigious Fernando Award for a lifetime of achievement in volunteerism, the Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund, the Circle of Life Award (along with his immediate family) from the Jewish Home for the Aging and too many other awards and recognitions to mention. Despite his busy schedule, he somehow finds the time to speak to our program’s high school students and inspire them to achieve even more than he has in his life. His history of rising from a poor but caring family in an entirely minority neighborhood in the middle of Detroit, Michigan, to achieve what he has accomplished, provides our students with a life example of what they can do, if motivated.

GARY BARTHELMESS

Detective LAPD – Most Life-Saving GOALmodel speaker

Gary is a LAPD Detective who supervises the Major Assault Crimes Unit, responsible for domestic violence cases in the Devonshire Division. He sees, on a daily basis, the worst cases of abuse and murder when violence enters the home. Instead of becoming immune to it or bitter from it, Gary spends much of his time speaking out about the dangers of violence in our community. He talks to high school students and warns them about dating people with controlling behaviors. He describes to them the “Cycle of Violence”, and encourages them to only participate in “Healthy” relationships. His presentation is quite shocking, but many of the kids come up after and share that either they, or a friend, or a parent are involved in a violent relationship, and they appreciate the crucial information Gary has given them.

TONY CARDENAS

California Assemblyman – Most Inspiring GOALmodel speaker

Tony’s record in the Legislature should give him a lot to be proud of. As last year’s Chairman of the assembly Budget Committee, Tony engineered the biggest budget surplus in state history – $2.2 billion, helping to brace California for the tough times ahead. He created the state’s first before-school programs and is the only legislator to successfully reform the state lottery to make funds more accountable to our children. He wrote the most comprehensive juvenile justice reform legislation in the nation to keep kids out of gangs and off streets. Where Tony truly shines, however, is when he is talking to kids and sharing his life story. He speaks about the important lessons he learned from his parents, inspiring youth to understand that if he can make it, so can they.

AARON FITZGERALD

Chopper 2 Reporter KCBS – Most Heroic Goalmodel speaker

Aaron works up in the sky as a News Helicopter Reporter for Channel 2. He comes from a small town and his two greatest loves include hockey and helicopters. When he realized a professional hockey career was not in his future, he focused on his other dream. He worked his way from the ground up (literally), washing the windows of other people’s helicopters at the Van Nuys Airport while taking flying lessons. Because he was so dedicated, honest and willing to work hard, Aaron stood out from other people. He was given a chance one day to fill in for a reporter at Channel 2 and he’s been there ever since. Aaron is also the hero, along with co-worker Larry Welk, who followed a Fox 11 News helicopter that was in trouble, back to the Van Nuys Airport, and pulled the cameraman and pilot to safety after they had crash landed.

DAVID GARBER

He came from Boston to L.A. with no connections and only his determination. Finding that no one in Hollywood would take him seriously as a writer, he found ways to get himself recognized that were quite unique. In order to get entertainment executives interested in hiring him, he would mail out his scripts in a box full of ping-pong balls and attach a note, which read, “Now you have the balls to hire me”. It paid off, and David’s writing, directing and producing credits include: “Alien Nation”, “Automan”, “California Dreams”, “Fall Guy”, “Rags to Riches”, “Sweet Valley High”, and “The Famous Jett Jackson”.

He got involved with the wrong kind of friends and began getting into serious trouble. He attended El Camino High, Canoga Park High, Cleveland High, Simi High, and Royal High. He constantly ditched school to go to parties instead of class. When he was seven years old his parents divorced so he grew up with his mom and step-dad, while visiting his father every other weekend. He went from household to household and moved to different schools to try and keep out of trouble. He regrets the pain he caused his parents while he went to jail and through rehab. For a while, he even lived as a runaway. Finally, he decided that he needed to turn his life around. In 1997 he graduated from Apollo Alternative School in Simi Valley with a 4.0 GPA. He met his girlfriend while attending Apollo, and credits her for helping him to graduate and stay on the right path. Young people relate to Adam and they look up to him as well. When he speaks to kids, his message has an immediate impact on them and they don’t want to take drugs, drink, fight, ditch school or disrespect their parents anymore.

Actor, Chaz Lamar Shepherd (“Set It Off”, “The Temptations”, “7th Heaven”), spoke to the students at Mid Valley Youth Center and the probation school next door in Van Nuys. Chaz spent 5 hours speaking to 3 groups of students about the importance of “purpose” in one’s life. “If you don’t have a purpose for your life, something that you’re about”, Chaz said, “then you’ll be about nothing, and have no reason to turn away from whatever is offered to you (gang life, drugs, crime).

The GOALmodels program has been bringing role models, such as Chaz, to speak to the students at Mid Valley Youth Center and the probation school for the past year. Many of the kids join our youth groups and begin getting involved in positive activities. GOALmodels is much more than a speaking program because we believe that “If you speak to kids they will learn something, but believe in them and they’ll change the world”.

At James Monroe High School approximately 400 legal-minded students gathered together to learn from two of the top attorneys in the business. District Attorney Steve Cooley, a successful former prosecutor and Los Angeles Police Department reservist, answered some tough questions from the students ranging from the three strikes law to the ongoing Iraqi crisis. Steve answered each question in a very candid manner, and even threw in a little humor now and then.

PAY’s own GOALmodel speaker, Lee Kanon Alpert shared his story of growing up poor in Detroit, and being a minority as well. He sent the message that regardless of their color or background, the field of law is available to anyone willing to work hard enough to achieve their goals. Lee also spoke about the many different types of law and how the students should go about pursuing their interests.

After the presentation, several students seized the opportunity to speak one-to-one with Steve and Lee. PAY, Monroe High School, and all the students who took part in this rare opportunity very much appreciate these high-powered attorneys taking the time out of their busy schedules to inspire the future’s great legal minds.

Positive Alternatives for Youth has been providing community building services in the San Fernando Valley for over thirty years.
